Do you love pizza? I do, but I had never tried vegan pizza before I went to New York. So, of course, I had to try.

Double Zero – Vegan Pizza in New York

Double Zero is a cozy little vegan restaurant in the charming East Village in New York. Their concept is entirely plant based food, primarily vegan pizza. An exciting concept that I hope more restaurants take after. Pizza is usually an unhealthy dish, but this vegan version is exactly the opposite.

The person behind the restaurant and the concept is the world-leading plant-based chef Matthew Kenney.

We tried these pizzas

  • Farro-Fennel Sausage
  • Smoked Carrot
  • White Pizza.

Farro-Fennel Sausage

To describe farro-Fennel in short, one can say that it tastes a little like tacos. Something like a Mexicana. This was also the only one of our three pizzas which were tomato-based. I give this 4 stars out of 5 stars.

Smoked Carrot

Smoked Carrot tasted a bit like a fresher version of Capricciosa. The bread is made from carrot, but it’s not very carroty. I had expected somewhat more minty taste as it said that it would be mint pesto.

However, the pizza was still very good. I give this 4 out of 5 stars.

I have never tasted anything like it, but it was super good. The fried green kale and garlic along with Maitake mushroom gave a very nice flavor. I give this 5 out of 5 stars.

My favorite

First, I’ll point out that all of the three were very well made pizzas with a good taste. But as with everything else, there is always something that stands out, and if I’m going to pick a favorite, it is clearly the White Pizza.

White Pizza is one of the most delicious pizzas I’ve ever eaten, and that says quite a lot since I have eaten authentic Italian pizza and tried lots of pizzerias in Sweden and other countries. This pizza had a puffy “bread” with fried kale, garlic, maitake mushrooms and a macadamia ricotta.

A full flavor explosion that gave my taste buds a culinary experience they’ll never forget. It is rare to find a fresh pizza that tastes this much. If you are hesitant about vegan pizza, try this.

The other two pizzas – Farro-Fennel Pizza and Smoked Carrot were both good. The first tasted a little like a taco, and the other tasted a bit like a fresher version of Capricciosa. We were three who shared these and I can warmly recommend you to do the same.

Don’t be afraid to try something different. I’m sure the other variants are at least as good as Farro-Fennel and Smoked Carrot, which is significantly better than most pizzas I’ve eaten around the world.
