Ljubljana is an incredibly beautiful city that deserves far more attention than it currently receives. The city offers amazing architecture, quaint little streets and when you “get tired” of it, some of Europe’s most beautiful nature is only 40 minutes away by car.
Ljubljana is definitely a destination to take a closer look at, especially if you want to see something new and not just visiting all the “classic” cities. The same applies to nearby Lake Bled and Bohinj, arguably two of Europe’s most beautiful places.
In this article, you can read more about My favorite attractions and things to do in Ljubljana as a tourist.
The canal in Ljubljana
The Canal in Ljubljana offers one of the most beautiful promenades in Europe. Along the river, bridges lie closely together with beautiful buildings and greenery in the background.
One can also experience the canal from the water by a boat.
Cankarjevo nabrezje
This area is perhaps best known for its flea market held every Sunday, but there are also several restaurants and bars. If you like local crafts and antiques, this is the place to go if you are in Ljubljana on a Sunday morning.
Old Town in Ljubljana
Just as in many other ancient cities, there is an old town area to admire. In the Old Town, you will find many of the best sights and many cozy restaurants and cafes.
To stroll around the old town, is definitely one of the must things to do in Ljubljana.
Day trip to Lake Bled
Did you know that the scenic area of Lake Bled is only 40 minutes away from Ljubljana by car? If you stay more than 1-2 days in Ljubljana, I can highly recommend a day trip or overnight stay at Lake Bled.
You can get to Lake Bled by bus or rental car. There are also guided tours there, but it is more worthwhile to go there on your own.
Franciskanska Cerkev
An old church with beautiful outside and inside, which was completed in the mid-1600s. Next door there is also a monastery from the 1300s. The church and monastery have many old relics that you can take a closer look at.

Ljubljana Castle
Around Ljubljana, there are a couple of castles, but the castle which is located in Ljubljana is the most visited and also the largest one. This castle was built as early as the 1500s and offers in addition to history, also a beautiful view of Ljubljana.
If you want, it’s possible to go into the and join the castle’s guided tour.

Preseren Square
In the heart of the old town, you will find Preseren Square, which is one of the major venues of the city. It’s here that the locals gather to grab a snack, eat or just stroll around the lovely buildings and side streets.
Ljubljana free city tour
Like guided city tours, I can recommend city walk in Ljubljana, which is free. The guides are both knowledgeable and entertaining if you want to know more about the history of the town and all the sights of Ljubljana.
Triglav National Park and Ribcev Laz
Nearby Lake Bled is the beautiful Triglav National Park, which is another scenic area with mountains, lakes, waterfalls and much more. If you like nature and hiking, this is the place to go! Just next door is the magically beautiful Lake Bohinj.
The difference from Lake Bled is that Ribčev Laz Bohinj and do not have as many tourists and visitors. Nature is mostly untouched.
I loved Bohinj, Soca river and everything in the Triglav National Park. Even if Lake Bled is also beautiful, it really can’t compare to the magnificent nature of Triglav National Park.

Butcher’s Bridge
A beautiful bridge in a prime location along the Ljubljana channel. This bridge is particularly popular with couples since the site is both charming and romantic, but perhaps above all for tradition to attach a padlock, a.k.a “lovelock” on the bridge to show and lock their love.
If you don’t have a padlock, you can buy in the souvenir shop located next to the bridge.
St. Nikolaos Cathedral
A beautiful church, that’s worth a visit if you like old buildings and architecture, especially churches.
Address: Ulica Dolnicharjeva 1.
Opera
Here await affordable opera- and theater shows in a beautiful building. The Opera House in Ljubljana is undoubtedly one of the city’s finest buildings! Tickets for a performance usually does not cost more than 10-20 euros, also making it an affordable activity.
