Mexico is located in southern North America. Officially known as the United Mexican States, it has a total population count of 126,577,691 which makes it the 10th most populous country in the world.

It covers a total area of 761,610 square miles which makes it the 5th largest in the Americas and the 13th largest country in the world. Mexico shares its borders with the United States of America, Guatemala, and Belize. Mexico is also the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world.

Mexico City

Mexico City is the capital of Mexico. The total population of the city is 12,294,193 which makes it the most populous city of Mexico and also North America. It is located at an altitude of 2,240 meters covering a total area of 573 square miles.

Spanish is the most widely spoken language in the city and it is the world’s largest Spanish speaking city. Mexico City forms the backbone of the country’s economy. The city contributes 15.8% of the GDP of the entire country with the main contributions being in the industrial and service sector. 

Mexico City is a historic and cultural center, and the most popular and famous sites include UNESCO World Heritage Sites Centro Histórico and the Xochimilco floating gardens.

Iztapalapa

Iztapalapa is the most populous borough of the Federal District and is usually considered part of the capital, Mexico City. With a total population of 1,815,786, it can be considered the second-largest city in Mexico and the most populous single municipality in the whole country.

Ecatepec

Ecatepec is located in central Mexico. The official name of the city is Ecatepec de Morelos meaning “Windy Hill.” The total population of the city is 1,655,015 making it the third-most populous city in Mexico. It covers a total area of 61.84 square miles.

The main areas of interest in the city are the Catholic Cathedral, the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús and the many churches from the colonial era. The city is also home to the Plaza las Americas shopping mall.

Guadalajara

Guadalajara is located in the state of Jalisco and with the total population of 1,495,182, it is the third-largest city of Mexico and the largest city of the Jalisco state. The service sector makes up most of its local economy together with industries such as information technology, shoes, textiles, and food processing.

It contributes 37% of the GDP of Jalisco and forms the third-largest economy of the country. Guadalajara is home to several notable cultural events including the May Cultural Festival, the Guadalajara International Book Fair, The Feast of the Dolls, Expo Ganadera, and Expo International Friendship Fair.

Puebla

Known as Puebla de Zaragoza in Spanish, Puebla is the capital and the largest city of the Puebla State. The history of the city dates back as far as 1531. It is the fifth-largest city and metropolitan area in Mexico with a total population of 1,434,062.

The city’s economy based on industries and agriculture. The main industries are base metals, chemicals, electrical items, and textiles whereas the main crops farmed in the city are corn, beans, wheat, avocados, pears, apple, and peaches.

Puebla is located 25 miles away from two major volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. The city has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its notable and important cultural attractions which include El Parian (Arts and Crafts Market), Amparo Museum, Biblioteca Palafoxiana, Fort Loreto, International Museum of the Baroque, and Museo de Arte.

Ciudad Juarez

Juarez is located in the state of Chihuahua in northern Mexico. With a total population of 1,321,004, it is the most populous city in the state. In 2008, the city was declared as “The City of Future”.

The city was founded by Franciscan Friar García de San Francisco in 1659. Due to the high altitude, its climate is akin to a cold desert. The city’s full name is Ciudad Juárez.

Juarez is a hub of manufacturing in northern Mexico. Many reputed companies have their manufacturing plants situated in the city. Bosch, Toro, Sumitomo, and Siemens are some of the most important names situated in the city.

Tijuana

Tijuana is located in the Baja California State in northwestern Mexico. Tijuana is the largest city in the state with a total population count of 1,300,983. The city spans a total area of 246 square miles.

Initially, the area was occupied by the Kumeyaay tribe. However, in 1542, the Europeans arrived and the city was an important cultural center due to its location.

Tourism is at its peak in the city. 300,000 visitors cross in from the United States with the parks, recreational points, and the nightlife of Tijuana being the biggest attraction for the tourists. But there is a dark side of Tijuana as well, and it has been ranked as the most dangerous city in the world

Leon

Leon is located in the state of Guanajuato in central Mexico. The city’s official name is Leon de los Aldama. With a total population of 1,238,962, it is the most populous city of the state and the eighth-most populous city of Mexico.

It is very famous for its leather industries. Manufacturing of leather boots, shoes, belts, and other accessories makes it a national and international market.

Leon has received the approbation of “City Water Champion” due to the massive work in the fields of water and sanitation. Universidad de Guanajuato, National Autonomous University of Mexico are two of the main higher education institutions in the city.
