Today marks the start of an interview series where I will introduce you to some of the people that inspire me the most.
In this interview, you will get to know Alexander Thian, also known as @Amrazing.
Who is Alexander Thian?
Hi, I am Alexander Thian. I am based in Jakarta. Aside from having fun on Instagram, you can find me on Twitter as well, with the same username. I am a photographer and a published author.
One of my bragging rights: President of Indonesia. Read my book, LOL
1. Do you have a favorite destination?
Yes. But I cannot just name one. It wouldn’t be fair to Iceland, Japan, Turkey, UK, Australia, and my home country: Indonesia
2. How or why did you become a world traveler?
It’s written on the stone that I held on my hand when I was born, actually. Hahaha. It started when I was just a boy. I had to travel to Jakarta from Pontianak by myself when I was just 8 years old.
The journey took three days since I traveled by boat, not an airplane. I loved my first solo trip so when I have the chance to travel again, I never hesitate. Since social media era, more and more brands want to collaborate. It’s been a blessing.
3. Are you more of a budget traveler or luxury traveler or something like a flashpacker?
Actually, I never define myself but it’s a mix of luxury and flashpacker.
4. How many countries have you visited?
I actually had to stop writing and think about it. I supposed it’s about 30-ish countries?
5. Name one person who inspires you and why
Darth Vader. He is too awesome. And I get to say, “I am your father, Luke!” to my french bulldog – whose name is … Luke Skywalker
6. What’s your favorite dish? (food)
Definitely Choipan or Chaikwe. It’s a vegetable cake, from West Kalimantan, Indonesia.
7. Name one thing that you can’t travel without
8. Have you learned anything from your travels?
Yes. A lot! Like, Sichuan pepper can numb your tongue, and you are allowed to jump and cry and dance and laugh at the same time while watching Aurora in the night sky of Iceland.
9. What is your most memorable experience?
The hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia, the surprise Heli ride in Margaret River, Western Australia, and the number one: watching Aurora Borealis in the heart of Reykjavik!
10. What’s your best travel tip?
Traveling will make you more awesome and I am serious. You get to know yourself more, you learn that you can count on yourself, that there are a lot of kind people out there, and the more you travel, the more you know how little you’ve seen.
Why does Alexander Thian inspire me?
The funny thing is that even though he both writes and speaks Indonesian mixed with English, I always find it interesting. Because he’s telling a story with his photos and videos, and for that, you don’t need to understand the words.
I also love his passion that shines through everything. His live videos are personal and fun to watch, and also you can tell he’s a humble guy that takes time for his fans and followers.
Someday I hope our paths will cross and that I get the chance to meet him also in person. I’ve been following him for a long time, and we’ve had some chats and stuff like that, so it will be so much fun when we’ll see ourselves in the same destination!
