Why Create a Bucket List?

There are many good reasons why you should create a bucket list. It’s a great way of setting up short term and long term goals that you want to achieve before you die. If you feel that life is passing by too fast, it’s probably a great time to create that bucket list of yours and make sure that you catch the days you got left.

You never know what happens later on, and there’s never a better time to fulfill your dreams than now. If you wait too long, you might be sorry and regret that you didn’t follow your dreams. The #1 regret that people have is that they didn’t travel more or that they didn’t spent quality time with their families.

That’s why you should write down some bucket list ideas and start following your dreams and do more things that you would like to do before you die.

How to make your own bucket list

A bucket list is always something individual, yet it’s quite helpful to look at others for inspiration and more bucket list ideas.

How much you actually write down is totally up to you and no one else. Remember that this is all about you and your dreams, unless you create a bucket list together with your partner.

Ask yourself the following things to get you started

  • What places do I want to visit before I die?
  • What things would I like to do before I die?
  • Are there any specific goals that I want to achieve?
  • What’s my biggest dream?
  • If you had unlimited time, what would you do?
  • What experiences are you yearning for?
  • Are there any skills that you want to learn?
  • Do you want to learn other languages?
  • Are there any people that you would like to meet?
  • What have you always wanted to do but haven’t done yet?

After that, choose if you want to make a digital bucket list or if you prefer to have it written down on a piece of paper. Choose whatever you like, it’s your list, and you make up the rules.

I like to have my bucket list available in digital form and a printed version. Then I always have it close by, and if I need motivation, I can just take a look at my bucket list to get motivation in my day to day life.

Many put things on their bucket list just because it is a “popular thing to do before you die”. However, the best advice for making your own bucket list is to only write down the things you really want to do and dreams you want to fulfill.

A bucket list can also be a sort of dream list with things and experiences, just as it can be something that can happen in the near future. My bucket list is a combination of the two. I mix my dreams with things that are possible in the near future and goals that might take longer to accomplish.

I also make sure to cross-check things that I have already done, to get a sense of fulfillment. Having too many things on your bucket list can cause stress, especially if you include unrealistic goals.

Since my primary interests in life are traveling, nature and animals, I mostly have travel related items and categories on my bucket list. However, there are no rules and you can include whatever you like.

As a final word, I would also like to point out, that it’s not about ticking things off a list. What really matters is your experience and memories you get while traveling, and of course, the people you meet.

It doesn’t matter how many things you’ve checked off your bucket list. With that said, it can still be very helpful and a fun thing to have your own bucket list. Just make sure that it doesn’t take over your experiences or life!
